Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, and Clint Barton were later joined by a whole new generation of heroes to form the greatest superhero team ever assembled. 🛡️ The Avengers: the greatest superhero team ever assembled
It all begins in September 1963, in the pages of The Avengers #1, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby. Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Hulk team up for the first time to face Loki, the god of mischief. The name "Avengers" was born, and with it one of the most profitable and beloved concepts in all of modern pop culture: a team that grows, splinters, reforms, and faces threats no single hero could defeat alone.
It would take until 2012 and Joss Whedon's blockbuster Avengers for this gathering to come to life on screen, laying the groundwork for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it today. Since then, the franchise has kept expanding: new members, new threats, new generations. To find out how this team came together step by step, head over to our dedicated page on the origins of the Avengers: how the team was formed, or our complete overview of the Avengers universe.
In this guide, we'll cover the six founding members, then the new generation of heroes who joined the team across the MCU's phases, before finishing with their greatest enemies and a full comparison table.
⚡ The 6 founding Avengers: the heart of the original team
They're the ones who started it all. Six radically different personalities, brought together almost against their will, who became, film after film, the most iconic team in superhero cinema.
Iron Man / Tony Stark
Billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist: Tony Stark is arguably the character who single-handedly launched the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008. After being captured and badly wounded, he builds his first suit of armor to survive, then keeps perfecting it to become Iron Man. Without any biological superpowers, he compensates with extraordinary intelligence, cutting-edge technology (the Arc Reactor, repulsors, J.A.R.V.I.S. and later F.R.I.D.A.Y.), and an iron will forged by guilt and a deep sense of sacrifice.
The Avengers' unofficial leader, Tony Stark makes the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame to save the universe. Find every suit and gauntlet in the Iron Man Products collection, or for the ultimate showdown with Thanos, the Iron Man and Infinity Gauntlets collection.
Captain America / Steve Rogers
A frail young man from Brooklyn, Steve Rogers is transformed by the Super Soldier Serum during World War II to become Captain America, a symbol of courage and unshakable loyalty. Frozen in ice for over 70 years, he wakes up in a world he no longer recognizes, but his moral compass remains intact: "I can do this all day."
The team's natural leader, Steve Rogers carries the famous vibranium shield. Find the whole Captain America Products collection, as well as shield replicas in Captain America Shields.
Thor
God of Thunder from Asgard, son of Odin and heir to the throne, Thor embodies the Avengers' raw power. Banished to Earth for his arrogance, he has to learn humility to become worthy of lifting Mjölnir, his famous enchanted hammer. The loss of his father, his sister Hela, his kingdom, and then his best friend Tony Stark make him one of the MCU's most emotionally rich characters.

Hulk / Bruce Banner
A nuclear physics genius, Dr. Bruce Banner is the victim of a gamma radiation accident that transforms him, whenever he's angry, into a green colossus of near-limitless strength: Hulk. This alter ego, long seen as a curse, eventually evolves into the fusion of both personalities as "Smart Hulk" in Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff
A former Russian spy trained in the Red Room program, Natasha Romanoff joins S.H.I.E.L.D. and then the Avengers, bringing discretion, strategy, and absolute composure. Without any superpowers, she compensates with exceptional martial skill and an arsenal of gadgets.
Her sacrifice on Vormir in Avengers: Endgame remains one of the saga's most powerful moments. Check out the Black Widow Products collection.
Hawkeye / Clint Barton
The best archer on the planet, Clint Barton has neither armor nor superhuman strength: only surgical precision and a deep sense of family sacrifice. He later becomes the vigilante Ronin after the Snap, before reuniting with his family thanks to Natasha's sacrifice.
