Seven years after sacrificing Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU to play its most iconic antagonist: Doctor Doom, ruler of Latveria. The Return of the Classic X-Men

The biggest casting surprise remains, without a doubt, the return of the historic actors from the original X-Men franchise, absent from Marvel screens for over a decade for some of them. Launched in 2000 by 20th Century Fox, the X-Men saga existed independently of the MCU for twenty years, with its own continuities sometimes contradicting each other between the original trilogy, the prequels, and the Wolverine spin-offs. Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019 opened the door, on paper, to a merger of the two universes — a promise fans had been waiting years for, one that Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) had already begun to hint at by introducing the concept of the Void and multiversal variants.

The return of the X-Men's founder

Patrick Stewart reprises the role he's played since the very first X-Men film in 2000, more than two decades later. His presence confirms the official integration of the former X-Men franchise — historically produced by 20th Century Fox — into MCU continuity, made possible by Disney's acquisition of the studio.

Ian McKellen — Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto

Ally or threat?

Professor X's longtime rival, Magneto also joins the cast, alongside James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast) — nearly the entire iconic cast of the 2000s X-Men trilogy, brought together for the first time in a Marvel Studios film.

The Thunderbolts and New Avengers

Formed in Thunderbolts* (2025), the New Avengers team also joins the battle against Doom, bringing a darker, morally ambiguous tone to the cast.

The Plot: Doom and the Multiverse

Official information remains deliberately limited as the release approaches, but the confirmed details sketch out an ambitious storyline: after consolidating his power over his own reality, Doctor Doom becomes aware of the Multiverse's existence and begins observing other realities he might, in turn, seek to rule. This premise directly echoes his role in the comic book event Secret Wars, in which Doom ultimately proclaims himself god of a world rebuilt from the fragments of multiple realities.

The film also explores the direct consequences of the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki, and Deadpool & Wolverine, each of which further destabilized the structure of the Marvel multiverse. The gathering of heroes from historically separate universes and studios — classic Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Thunderbolts — is therefore more than just a marketing hook: it fits directly into the narrative logic of a multiverse collapsing in on itself.

One of the great mysteries surrounding the plot concerns the exact nature of the conflict between Doom and the assembled heroes: is he acting as a pure conqueror, in the mold of Thanos with his Infinity Gauntlet, or is his motivation closer to that of the comic book event Secret Wars, where he seeks above all to preserve a multiverse on the verge of collapse, even if it means becoming its sole master? This ambiguity, true to the spirit of the character as created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, hints at an antagonist with motivations far more nuanced than pure destruction.

The Trailer and the Clues

The first official trailer, unveiled on July 20, 2026, confirmed several details fans had eagerly awaited: the full look of Doctor Doom's green armor, a scene in which he stops Thor's Stormbreaker bare-handed — a rare display of strength for an MCU antagonist — and brief glimpses of nearly the entire cast gathered for a collective battle scene. The trailer closes on what several observers have described as "an unthinkable decision" Doom would force on the assembled heroes, though its exact nature has yet to be revealed.

From The Kang Dynasty to Doomsday: A Major Change of Direction

The film's title and antagonist weren't always what they are today. The sixth Avengers film was originally set to be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, featuring Kang the Conqueror, played by actor Jonathan Majors, already introduced in the series Loki and in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). This project was abruptly scrapped in December 2023, after Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault, leading Marvel Studios to drop him and completely rewrite the Multiverse Saga's central antagonist.

This change of direction, as sudden as it was unprecedented in the studio's history, ultimately gave rise to Avengers: Doomsday as we know it today: rather than recasting the role of Kang, Marvel Studios chose to entirely redirect the story around Doctor Doom, a character with an equally rich mythology in the comics and renewed on-screen potential thanks to the casting of Robert Downey Jr. While Kang's narrative arc isn't officially ruled out of the MCU's long-term future, this pivot illustrates the studio's ability to rethink its plans years in advance when circumstances demand it.

Anthony and Joe Russo, already responsible for staging the full Infinity Gauntlet arc in Infinity War and Endgame, return to the helm to orchestrate this unprecedented gathering. Toward Avengers: Secret Wars (2027)

Announced from the very conception of Doomsday as the second half of a two-part story, Avengers: Secret Wars will hit theaters on December 17, 2027, exactly one year after its predecessor. While plot details remain largely under wraps, the title itself refers directly to one of the most acclaimed comic book events in Marvel Comics history, in which Doctor Doom absorbs the cosmic power of the Beyonders to rebuild an entire world, Battleworld, from the fragments of a shattered multiverse — a storyline we cover in detail on our page dedicated to Secret Wars in the comics.

If the film adapts even part of this storyline, Doomsday could well end on a narrative shift as radical as Thanos's Snap in 2018 — plunging the entire Marvel universe into a total overhaul that Secret Wars would then be tasked with resolving, echoing the Infinity War / Endgame diptych seven years earlier.

A Record Budget for the MCU's Most Ambitious Film

According to several industry reports, Avengers: Doomsday has simply become the most expensive production in Disney's entire history, with a total budget approaching $700 million, split between roughly $400 million in production costs and $300 million for a worldwide marketing campaign. This budget surge is explained by several compounding factors: complex visual effects tied to multiverse sequences, a cast made up of dozens of A-list actors whose fees add up quickly, and significant rewrites and reshoots carried out during production to accommodate successive casting changes.
