The essentials in 30 seconds: in the Marvel universe, not all powers are created equal. Some allow you to lift a car, while others can rewrite reality itself. This top 5 lists the rarest cosmic powers in the MCU and the comics: reality manipulation (Scarlet Witch), mastery of time (the Time Stone), complete control of the Infinity Stones (Thanos), synthesis of the Mind Stone (Vision), and travel through the Multiverse (Doctor Strange, Loki). At the end of the article, you’ll find collectibles and collector’s items dedicated to these exceptional powers.
What Is a Cosmic Power in the Marvel Universe?
In Marvel, a general distinction is made between “physical” abilities (superhuman strength, regeneration, speed) and so-called cosmic abilities: those that act directly on the fundamental laws of the universe, such as space, time, matter, or reality itself. A cosmic power does more than make one character stronger than another: it changes the rules of the game for everyone, including the most powerful heroes like Thor or Captain Marvel.
These powers are rare precisely because they are dangerous to wield. In both the comics and the MCU, most characters who have access to them eventually lose control, become corrupted by their own power, or pay a very heavy personal price for using it. This rarity, combined with a constant narrative risk, is what makes these powers so fascinating to fans.
Our Ranking Methodology
To establish this ranking, we used simple criteria: the scope of the effect (a power that affects one object is not comparable to a power that affects the entire universe), rarity in the comics and the MCU (how many characters truly have access to it), and the narrative impact demonstrated on screen or on the page. Here is our selection, from number 5 to number 1.
| Rank | Cosmic Power | Associated Character(s) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Synthesis of the Mind Stone | Vision |
| 4 | Multiverse Travel and Manipulation | Doctor Strange, Loki, the TVA |
| 3 | Absolute Mastery of Time | Time Stone, Kang |
| 2 | Complete Control of the Infinity Stones | Thanos |
| 1 | Reality Manipulation | Scarlet Witch |
5. The Synthesis of the Mind Stone — Vision
Vision holds a unique place in the Avengers universe: an artificial intelligence born from the fusion of J.A.R.V.I.S., the synthetic body designed by Ultron, and the Mind Stone itself. The latter does not merely give him access; it is literally embedded in his forehead and fused with his consciousness. As a result, Vision possesses superhuman intelligence, total control over the density of his synthetic body—allowing him to pass through matter or become as hard as vibranium—and an almost instantaneous ability to analyze his surroundings.
This power remains rare because no other MCU character shares this unique fusion of artificial intelligence and a cosmic stone. To learn more about his journey, see our article Vision: The AI Who Became an Avenger.
4. Traveling Through and Manipulating the Multiverse — Doctor Strange, Loki, and the TVA
The Multiverse encompasses an infinite number of parallel realities, each with its own variants of the characters we know. Few beings in the Marvel universe are capable not only of traveling between these realities, but also of being aware of them and actively manipulating them. Doctor Strange, as the Sorcerer Supreme, opens dimensional portals through his mystic arts. Meanwhile, the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization born from Loki's experiments, monitors and prunes timeline branches to preserve a sacred timeline.
This power is particularly rare because the very existence of the Multiverse remains unknown to the vast majority of inhabitants of each reality. Having access to it and understanding it places these characters in a category of their own. To learn more, read The Marvel Multiverse Explained Simply and Doctor Strange: Master of the Mystic Arts.

Among the six Infinity Stones, the Time Stone holds a unique place: it allows its user to accelerate, slow down, reverse, or even freeze the passage of time within a given area. This is the stone Doctor Strange uses in Avengers: Infinity War to explore more than fourteen million possible futures before the final battle against Thanos. Beyond the stone itself, entities such as Kang the Conqueror master time travel on a scale that surpasses even the Avengers' conventional abilities, able to navigate between eras and alter the course of time at will.
The rarity of this power lies in its danger: any alteration of time risks creating uncontrollable timelines, as the birth of the TVA aptly illustrates. 2. Total Control of the Six Infinity Stones — Thanos
Individually, each Infinity Stone already grants near-cosmic power. But it is their complete assembly, mounted on a gauntlet forged on Nidavellir, that transforms its bearer into one of the most powerful entities in the entire Marvel universe. Thanos is, to date, the only character to have gathered all six stones simultaneously and used them at full power: control over space, reality, power, the soul, time, and the mind combined into a single will.
The result is known to every fan: the Snap, which erased half of all life in the universe with a simple snap of the fingers. This level of control remains unique in the comics and the MCU, with no other character having managed to master all six stones simultaneously with such precision. Read the full story of this event in our article Thanos: The Mad Titan and His Quest for Balance and discover how Tony Stark replicated the feat in Iron Man's Nano Gauntlet.

View product1. Reality Manipulation — Scarlet Witch
At the top of this ranking, Wanda Maximoff's chaos magic, also known as Scarlet Witch, remains probably the most terrifying power in the entire Marvel universe. Unlike the Reality Stone, which alters perceptions and the appearance of things, Wanda's chaos magic allows her to literally rewrite reality itself: create an entire life with false memories for a whole town (WandaVision), summon and control versions of herself across the Multiverse (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), or distort matter and energy at will without any external artifact.
What makes this power unique is that it does not depend on any cosmic stone, unlike Thanos or Vision. It is intrinsic to Wanda herself, making it unpredictable and difficult to contain, even for its wielder, and so far without any demonstrated equivalent in the MCU. To learn everything about her journey and the extent of her abilities, read our dedicated article Scarlet Witch: Chaos and Distorted Reality.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most powerful cosmic power in the entire Marvel universe?
In comics, this title often goes to abstract entities such as Order, Chaos, or the Beyond, far above the characters featured here. But among the heroes and villains active in the MCU, Scarlet Witch’s reality manipulation and Thanos’s total control of the Infinity Stones remain the two most extensively documented examples on screen.
Is Scarlet Witch's magic more powerful than the Infinity Stones?
This is a recurring debate among fans. The comics suggest that she can: Wanda's chaos magic is sometimes portrayed as powerful enough to rewrite reality on a scale that even surpasses the combined abilities of the six stones, notably during the “House of M” storyline.
Why can't Vision use all the powers of the Mind Stone?
Because the Mind Stone fused with Vision primarily acts as a source of energy and consciousness rather than as a tool he actively manipulates at will. Its power nevertheless remains sufficient to grant him extraordinary intelligence and perception.
Do Kang and Doctor Strange have the same type of time-based power?
No. Doctor Strange manipulates time locally through the Time Stone and his mystic arts, within a limited and generally reversible framework. Kang, on the other hand, naturally navigates the timelines and the Multiverse without depending on an external artifact, making him a threat of an entirely different magnitude.
Are there collectible items dedicated to these cosmic powers?
Yes, our store offers many figurines, statues, posters, and tapestries dedicated to Scarlet Witch, Thanos, Vision, Doctor Strange, and Loki. Find them all in our Avengers Figurines and Avengers Posters collections.
